Derby Firms Scoop Major Property Awards

20th October 2009

It was a successful night for Derby at the 2009 East Midlands Property Dinner, with two of the city’s most high profile firms scooping the top awards.

Pride Park-based Cedar House Investments was awarded the title of Commercial Developer of the Year in recognition of its contribution to development activity over the past 12 months, whilst leading city law firm Flint Bishop scooped the award for Deal of the Year, for its work on the £46m purchase of a five million sq ft commercial property portfolio for Clowes Developments (UK) Ltd.

The winners were announced at a dinner hosted by well known wit and raconteur Giles Brandreth at the East Midlands Conference Centre in Nottingham, in the presence of 500 of the region’s leading property professionals.

Since it was launched in 2000, the East Midlands Property Dinner has established itself as the leading event for the region’s property sector.

The awards, which are organised by Business Midlands Insider magazine, recognise best practice across the range of property disciplines and featured 10 separate categories.

The Commercial Developer of the Year award was presented to the developer, which has delivered imaginative, commercial and successful schemes over the past 12 months.

Despite a slow-down in the market, Cedar House Investments has continued to match developments against demand to create a diverse range of high quality, sustainable schemes across the region and its portfolio now exceeds £75 million.

Originally best known for its development work on Pride Park, the firm has established a reputation for its innovative regeneration of brownfield sites and has now developed a diverse range of schemes at strategic locations across the Midlands, including Northampton, Ashby, Rugby, Corby, Tamworth and Stoke-on-Trent.

Runners-up for the award, which was sponsored by Marketing Derby, were Blueprint and Goodmans.

Flint Bishop is the only law firm to have been nominated in any category at this year’s awards. The firm won the Deal of the Year award for its work on the £46m purchase of a five million sq ft commercial property portfolio for client Clowes Developments (UK) Ltd, which was completed at the turn of the year.

This incorporated a mixture of land and industrial units across the East and West Midlands, the most high profile of which is East Midlands Distribution Centre at Castle Donington.

Despite a declining market, Flint Bishop has been involved in a number of high profile property related transactions over the past 12 months. The firm continues to buck the current trend and attracts heavyweight clients and significant deals through its creative approach to deal-making and its ability to identify emerging markets.

Runners-up for this award, which was sponsored by Freeth Cartwright, were Heb for their contribution to the Specsavers deal.

Flint Bishop was also shortlisted for the title of Consultant of the Year in recognition of the wide range property related transactions that is has handled over the past 12 months.

Commenting on their award, Chris Carlisle, managing director of Cedar House Investments, said:

“Cedar House Investments has built its reputation on its ability to identify superior development opportunities and deliver striking, sustainable schemes and we are particularly delighted to have been recognised for our achievements with the title Commercial Developer of the Year during this challenging economic climate.”

Speaking about their success, Ian Beardmore, senior partner and head of commercial property at Flint Bishop said:

“The East Midlands Property Awards Dinner is a showcase of the region’s property sector and I am absolutely delighted to have won the award for Deal of the Year, an achievement heightened by the strength of the competition.

“I am particularly pleased that we have been recognised for our work on the Clowes Developments (UK) Ltd project which, given the tight deadlines and volume of work involved, was a fantastic team achievement.”

Flint Bishop has won a number of awards and accolades over recent years including winning the Managing Partners Forum’s ‘Mould Breaking Firm of the Year Award’, being named ‘Top Legal Employer’ by global publishing house CRF and receiving a shortlist nomination by The Lawyer for ‘Law Firm of the Year’.
