Ashbourne Jobs Boost With M&S Set for August Opening

15th June 2009

Quality retailer M & S are to open one of the first of their new-look Simply Food stores on the Ashbourne’s prestigious Waterside Park development in August.

The news is set to create over 40 new jobs and is further evidence of the success of the 36-acre regeneration project being spearheaded by Cedar House Investments on the site of the former Nestle factory in the town.

Cedar House Investments’ Chairman, Peter Gadsby, and former Ashburnian, said: “We’re absolutely delighted to announce that M&S are opening shortly. It means Ashbourne will be one of the first places in the country to host one of the new formats of Simply Food stores.

“It will be twice the size of the firm’s store at Kingsway in Derby and I have no doubt that it will serve to attract shoppers from a wide area around Ashbourne – something which, over time,  can only help to boost trade in the town as a whole.

“It will be open, seven days a week and is sure to attract Sunday trade and add more shopping value to the town. In addition, with the opening of the store we will be introducing a regular, free shuttle bus service linking Waterside with the town centre.

“The fact that a name like M&S is demonstrating confidence in Ashbourne is excellent news. With other major retailers Homebase and Halfords already successfully based at Waterside, the town’s profile is growing even at a time when the economic climate is still presenting serious challenges.”

The M&S store will occupy 11,000 sq ft. Cedar House Managing Director, Chris Carlisle added: “When the store opens in August, it is expected to bring the total number of jobs created by our Waterside Park development to around 250 which is something we’re immensely proud of.

“The overall development has been a tremendous success, not only in revitalising a former derelict area but also in boosting the economy of the town – helping to rebuild its momentum.

“Other outlets on the retail park are reporting successful figures which shows that Ashbourne has the ability to attract shoppers from surrounding areas and the story doesn’t end here.

“We’re close to reaching agreement with further tenants which will add even more choice to Waterside’s excellent retail offer,” explained Mr Carlisle.
